Yes, death does give life meaning. When someone lives, they try to accomplish things and make some sort of impact on people and communities before they die. I don't believe that people are are just living until they die. Because everyone dies eventually, that gives life a meaning for everyone. No matter who you are, what you do while you are alive will affect someone or something else after your death.
I agree with nick here when he says that everyone dies but not everyone lives. I think that when people do not make an effort in life to accomplish something they do not actually live life.
I do not think that death gives life meaning. I think that the actions that you do, the way you live, and the things you peruse give life real meaning. Death is just an event that ends your life. Death also takes life away.
I agree, and for most of us, we only get one chance at life. Therefore, we need to live it to its fullest and enjoy every minute that we have by doing the things that we enjoy, along with spending time with the ones who mean so much to us.
I think this is a great point. The decisions one makes throughout their life is what make them who they are. Death does not really make them who they are but how they die could be a way that they are remembered.
I do think that death gives life meaning. A lot of what we do is leaving a legacy for ourselves. I like how Brian said that the things that we do and accomplish will always leave an impact on someone else's life. This topic makes me think of the song "live like you were dying" by Tim McGraw and it sums up my point perfectly. I feel like we live to do as much as possible before we meet our fate and I think that ultimately gives death meaning in ones life
Death does give life a meaning. But it is not the only factor that does. What you do before death is what gives your life meaning. The lives that you able to touch and the lives that touch you. Death is the final factor in what gives life meaning.
I feel like death gives you life and gives life meaning because if there was nothing to end it all there would be nothing to enjoy. It is a lot like being on a football team without any games or a championship you would go to practice all the time and it will just be an endless cycle with no ending. there has to be a ending to everything and because there is death it gives you incentive to go out end live your life the way you want to.
I think death helps give life meaning. Since each person has a finite time in which to live, each person must choose how to live within that limited time frame. The choices we make during this time vary from seeking pleasure to obtaining knowledge and spirituality. I also think the inevitability of death is what leads people to seek meaning, It is almost like an inevitable death evokes a sense of urgency in order to seek the meaning of life. This may or may not be true, just a thought.
I do not think death gives life meaning. What you do throughout your life is what gives your life meaning and it is how you are remembered. Your actions, words, and they way you treat people is how you will be remembered. A person is living by doing things they want to do and being happy. Death is just the end of life for someone and their time of living is over.
I understand where you're coming from here. One's life is not merely measured by the idea that it is finite. What you do in your life matters. However, if you knew that you would never die, do you think it's possible that you behave differently? After all, you wouldn't have to contend with the idea of a final judgment or the "ride" ending. It's possible that death gives life meaning simply because it means that it ends. Items in a limited series are more valuable than mass produced products. And for me, life is the same. We don't know when it ends... 3 more weeks? 3 more decades? If for some reason I only get 3 more weeks, I want to make them count. My actions will have more weight assigned to them.
I agree with you Christine. I think it is because of the unknown that sayings such as "Live like you are dying" come about, encouraging people to live life to the fullest before they are no longer able to. Our talk about "living authentically" in class really got me thinking about this blog topic. Would people still be striving to live authentically if death did not exist? For that matter, what if it still did, but we knew the exact time and date of our passing? I think that this would lead to unhealthy patterns of living, with many people trying to compensate for things they either did or did not do in their life as they drew closer to death. I think it is the mystery of death that helps give our life meaning.
I do believe death gives life a meaning. The fear that one can die at any moment should be a driving force to accomplish as much as you can while you are living. If you lived forever would you really have the drive to go out and experience new things. Death gives you a certain amount of time on Earth that you have to utilize. Everyone wants to be remembered in one way or another so they life their life with a certain meaning hoping that after death their memory will carry on.
I believe death gives life a meaning to some people. Some people live their life as if they are going to die tomorrow, living their life as fully as possible where others may also pass tomorrow but have done nothing they wanted to accomplish in their lifetime (or maybe they didn't realize their time on Earth was ending so soon).
I feel death does give life meaning. It is at the root of everything we do whether we think about it or not. I mean that with out an end or a time span, we would have no reason to really do anything. We could put things off indefinitely because we would have no need for survival at the lowest level. We could just sit around and do what ever we wanted with no thought of the consequences. From a Christian point of view death gives life meaning in that this life is essentially our "test" and how we act determines how we will continue in the afterlife. It also gives meaning and a point to the concept of an afterlife which also means a Heaven or Hell. If we never had to die then we would never have those experiences.

ReplyDeleteDeath doesn't really give life meaning, but it makes it that much more valued to us. All things in nature will die. There is a cliché quote which kind of fits this. "Everybody dies, but not everybody lives." despite the fact it is cliché and cheesy, I think it fits because it kind of says you can go through your life and not do anything with this blessing, or you can be free and do what you heart tells you. Everybody dies, so death doesn't really give it meaning. Life is we do with it.

ReplyDeleteIf death does not give life meaning than what does living mean? If there were no finite end I don't think we would live our lives the same.
