  1. My name is Melissa Brown. I am a Cincinnati firefighter paramedic since 2000. I also work in University Hospital's emergency room as a paramedic since 2009. I graduated from TMC in 2005 with a Bachelors in Sociology. I returned to TMC to obtain a BSN and plan to finish as a NP from UC. My personal goal is to grasp a truer understanding of death from a scientific as well as philosophical approach. It is something I have struggled with in my professional career with patients as well as patient's families as they or a loved one are faced with death, either suddenly or over time.

    1. Hi Melissa. Glad to see that you are returning to TMC. What made you choose TMC, and what made you decide to become a nurse?

    2. Melissa, I give you lots of credit for working in the field that you do, something I personally wouldn't be able to do, I'm way too emotional. I have a few friends who are nurses and paramedics and I tell them all the time that they are my heroes. Those professions are for really special people. Just wanted to share that.

    3. Hi Steven, I chose TMC because honestly, it's the only school that was not going to make me retake classes I had already taken because they were classes I had taken greater than 10 years ago. I am pursuing nursing because I can retire from my job with the Cincinnati Fire Dept in 8 years. After working in the ER at UC I was able to see first hand what nurses, docs and nurse practitioners do and decided nursing would be the best course for me. April, thank you for your kind words.

    4. Melissa, I also plan to become an NP after working a few years in the field. What specialty will you choose? Pediatric? Geriatric? Family?

    5. Melissa, I am excited to hear you opinions on the subjects of death and dying having already been in the medical field. I'm sure you will have many insights and experiences that no one else in the class has.

    6. Alexis, the only field I know is EMS and critical care/trauma. I am interested in exploring as much as I can before I decide where exactly I want to work. How do you like neuro? Thanks Abby. I was excited to take this class and hear fresh takes on the subject.

    7. Melissa: are you both a firefighter and paramedic or a special kind of paramedic?

  2. My name is Steven Kelley. I am a Junior, majoring in History, and minoring in PreLegal Studies. I am the Chair of Technology for the Student Activities Board. I intend to be a criminal defense lawyer at the start of my career, and I hope to eventually work my way up to a prosecuting attorney. As far as goals for this class, I hope to gain some insight into the struggles that people go through when it comes to death. I have had some experience, but i know that everyone experiences death differently, and I want to be able to help friends and family when a loved one dies.

  3. My name is Kevin Eads I am in my final year here at Thomas More. I am majoring in Sports & Entertainment marketing. I have interviews lined for me soon as I graduate, so I have options for when I'm finished. As for the class I needed to fulfill my philosophy credits and thought this would be the most intriguing. Also like the fact that the class is discussion based and not lectures.

  4. My name is Abby Osborne, I am a sophomore biology major and am on the TMC women's soccer team. I hope to one day go to medical school and become either a radiologist or cardiologist. This class sounded interesting to me because it deals with a subject that occurs everyday in our society yet is one many avoid talking about. With the goal of becoming a doctor death is something I may (but hopefully not) have to become familiar with in the future so I believe this class will serve as a good starting point for understanding the process both in a scientific and philosophical sense.

    1. I agree with you Abby. Having worked around death for many years it's almost taboo to talk about, which is bizarre because it's inevitable. We are born we die. What we saw in the video are real life scenarios you would be in if you do become a cardiologist. I admire your goal of wanting to become an MD.

    2. Going into the medical profession as well, I agree that this class will serve as a good starting point for understanding death. It will also help us better deal with death and help us help others to deal with the death of a loved one.

  5. My name is April Husak, I am a senior and transferred to Thomas More in August. I am from Canada. My major is in Business with a concentration in Human Resources. I have spent the last 9 years working for the Alberta Provincial Government in HR and going to school part-time, where I completed my HR Management Diploma (equivalent to Associates Degree in US) a few weeks before moving here. This class sounded extremely interesting, and I think will touch on some pretty sensitive areas. It is going to be interesting to see the different viewpoints. By taking this class I think it will be help me on my own personal level and in my career for understanding and dealing with situations involving illness and death, and how I perhaps can help others.

    2. Long story short, my boyfriend was born and raised around Northern Kentucky, we met in Las Vegas almost 3 years ago. Coming down here was the best option for me (and us) at this point in time. It gives us a couple years in the same country before I graduate, then we'll go from there.

  6. Hi my name is Adam Sprecker, I am a junior Biology Major and i am on SAB's tech committee. I intend to pursue a career as a Medical Lab technician at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. During this time a will obtain my Master's Degree in Biology. As far as my goals in this class i need it to fulfill a core requirement to Thomas More College. I would like to gain further insight into how other deal with the death of loved ones. We have all experienced death in our own way and choose to deal with it in various ways. In the future hopefully i can gain enough basic knowledge so that maybe i can help those who i see suffering from the death of a loved and help them ease their suffering even if its just a little bit at a time.

I have four children and am engaged to a fifth child. :) After graduation, I hope to work in Probation and Parole or somewhere within the CPS world. I also would like to continue coaching soccer at the youth level wherever I end up getting a job. I really don't know what to expect from this class because I have never taken a Philosophy class before and I don't have much experience with death and dying. But I am eager to share my thoughts and opinions with the class.

  10. Hi, friends! I'm Christine Huck and I'm finally a senior at Thomas More. I am a double major in Political Science & Philosophy. Currently I am unemployed, but I do have the pleasure of babysitting my nephew occasionally. My personal goals for this class are simply to push myself and my beliefs about the mystery surrounding death. My mother is a registered nurse and has worked in critical care for 30+ years so I do have some exposure to the subject itself. So, it will be interesting for me to reconcile her experiences with the experiences I will gain from this class.

  11. My name is Alexis Fangman. I am a junior majoring in Nursing. I work PRN (as needed) at St. Elizabeth as a nursing assistant on the neuro floor. After graduation I will be moving to Findlay, OH and I hope to find a job there as a labor and delivery nurse. I do want to go back to school and become either a Nurse Practitioner or a Midwife after working a few years. In the nursing career, death is all around us. By taking this class I hope I am better able to deal with the death I will inevitably face at some point in my career and how I can help those families who are dealing with the death of a loved one.

  13. I'm Dr. Cate. My undergraduate work was interdisciplinary with afocus in medical ethics: I wrote a senior thesis on death & dying. I have an MA in medical ethics from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville; my Ph.D. in feminist philosophy of science is from UC.

Regarding teaching, I care about: cell phones in class, being late, being prepared & ready to discuss, plagiarism. I don’t care about: eating or drinking in class, some discussion in class with your friends or neighbors, but don’t do it while your classmates are presenting, and don’t do it excessively. FYI: I do cry easily, so don’t freak out.

    Welcome to death & dying.

  18. My name is Austin Corsmeier. I'm 20 years old and a sophomore nursing major. I'm from Covington, Kentucky and went to Saint Henry for high school where I played soccer before I got injured. In the medical field, death and dying are a predominant theme, so I thought a class that explored different viewpoints on this field would be beneficial to not only me, but also my patients as well.

  23. Well, I'm Daniel Merrill, and I'm a senior Psychology major, with a minor in Biology. I've always held an interest in this material and the subject in general, and in particular how people feel and deal with the issue. I think consideration of this subject will be a major help as a future psychologist, regardless of the direction my degree goes.

  24. Hey, I'm Lucas Nare. I'm a junior biology major here at TMC with plans to eventually become a physical therapist. I took Biomedical Ethics with Dr. Cate last spring, which was an incredibly interesting course that really made me think (and I'm not just saying that for extra credit). That influenced me to take Death&Dying this semester. Death is a part of everyone's life whether we like it or not, so learning more about it and how to deal with it will be interesting and helpful.
